Changes to functional skills assessments

ApprenticeThis article sits within the Apprentice section

The functional skills requirements for apprenticeships have temporarily changed because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.  These changes allow you and your apprentices to focus on the other key parts of the apprenticeship and its assessment.

If your apprentice was due to go through gateway up to 31 July 2020:

  • Level 2 English & maths assessments were all suspended – if this was a requirement of the Level 2 apprenticeship or the apprentice was undertaking a Level 3 (or above) apprenticeship then a calculated grade will be awarded (where this hasn’t already been achieved)
  • Level 1 English & maths assessments were suspended – a calculated grade will be awarded where the individual has not already achieved this.

If your apprentice is due to go through gateway from 1 August 2020:

  • Level 1 English & maths: the apprentice must take the functional skills assessment as no calculated grades will be issued
  • Level 2 English & maths:
    • If this is not a requirement of the Level 2 apprenticeship then the need to take the assessment has been temporarily suspended up to 31 March 2021
    • If this is a mandatory requirement of the Level 2 apprenticeship, then the apprentice must take the functional skills assessment (where this hasn’t already been achieved) as no calculated grades will be issued
    • For Level 3 (or above) apprenticeships then the apprentice must take and pass the functional skills assessment (where this hasn’t already been achieved) as no calculated grades will be issued
