Changes to functional skills assessments

The functional skills requirements for apprenticeships have temporarily changed because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

These changes allow you and your apprentices to focus on the other key parts of the apprenticeship and its assessment.

Apprentices can take their end-point assessments before they receive the calculated grades for their English and maths functional skills qualifications.

Level 2 (intermediate) apprenticeships

If the apprentice is due to take their end-point assessment for a level 2 apprenticeship before 31 July 2020, they do not need to:

  • study towards the level 2 English and maths functional skills assessment
  • take the level 1 or level 2 English and maths functional skills assessment

Apprentices who need to achieve level 1 or level 2 functional skills for their apprenticeship will receive a calculated grade if they have not already achieved it.

Level 3 apprenticeships and above

If the apprentice is due to take their end-point assessment for a level 3 (or above) apprenticeship before 31 July 2020, they do not need to take the level 2 English and maths functional skills assessment.

Apprentices who have not achieved their level 2 functional skills already will receive a calculated grade instead.

We’ll review all these changes again in July 2020.
